The Origins and Evolution of Zumba Fitness in Costa Mesa, California

Zumba, the international dance-fitness craze, has its roots in Costa Mesa, California. This energetic workout combining Latin dance moves with aerobics first started in the 1990s thanks to Alberto "Beto" Perez, a Colombian dancer and choreographer.

Perez created the Zumba program in the mid-1990s while living in Cali, Colombia. He forgot to bring his regular aerobics music to a class he was teaching, so he improvised using some Latin dance tapes he had in his backpack. His students loved the fusion of Latin dance with aerobics, and thus the concept for Zumba was born.

In 1999, Perez brought his new Zumba classes to the United States, settling in Miami, Florida. He and two Colombian entrepreneurs, Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion, then founded the company Zumba Fitness and worked to grow the program.
